The largest ever trade show to be held in Australia has wrapped up at the Sydney Showground for another four years. With over 600 domestic and international exhibitors spread over 45,000 sqm, the Australasian International Mining Exhibition is one of the world’s top mining exhibitions. Over 17,000 people streamed through the gates over the four days of the exhibition to see the latest in mining innovation.

Our display of Dana Spicer electronic controlled powershift transmissions, axles and engines, used in a range of soft and hard rock mining applications, received attention from mining equipment operators from around the country. Drivetrain’s highly trained staff were on hand to promote Drivetrain’s technical sales, genuine parts, service and comprehensive service exchange offerings for all of our off-highway powertrain components.

Also on display at the Drivetrain stand for the first time were heavy engine components from EMD Power Products and German made Seco engine parts, attracting attention from mining’s power generation market.

Drivetrain was very impressed with the turn-out at this year’s exhibition and look forward to exhibiting again at AIMEX 2015.

Drivetrain has expanded its ANZ operations by opening a new Branch in Adelaide and moving to larger facilities in Newcastle and Auckland. All three facilities will be equipped to provide a range of services, including genuine spare parts supply, technical support and maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) for off-highway powertrain components, as well as in-field support of the Gastrain business.

The Adelaide facility, in Royal Park, was established to service several key Drivetrain segments, including Defence, Mining, Materials Handling, Rail, and Heavy Truck & Trailer. Drivetrain Executive General Manager – ANZ, Frank Gili, says, “For some time, existing and potential customers in the South Australia region have discussed with us the need to establish a local operation to support their needs and ensure a higher level of service. The new Adelaide facility will improve MRO turn-around times, as previously, off-highway powertrain units needing repair or overhaul were being transported to our Melbourne, Sydney or Perth facilities. We have listened to our customers and are confident our new facility in Adelaide will meet their support requirements. Adelaide is also a key location for support of our Gastrain business and the Hedemora Diesel engines in the Collins Class submarines and we have a senior engineer on-site.”

The branch will also be a key centre of support for the locomotive, mining and essential services markets, providing MRO for transmissions, diesel engines and generators. Established facilities in Newcastle and Auckland have experienced significant growth over the last two years and as a result, Drivetrain has relocated to larger facilities, in Thornton and East Tamaki.

To meet the demands of its local coal customers the new Newcastle facility now has four full-time service technicians
with extra capacity available to increase this number when required. Drivetrain Auckland has relocated to allow for the setup of a new workshop, based on increasing customer requirements in the materials handling and mining sectors. Gili says, “A keyrequirement within the New Zealand, and indeed Australian market, is our high level of expertise in Dana Spicer TE electronic controlled transmissions, used extensively in the materials handling container segment. Supported by factory-trained service technicians and diagnostic testing equipment, developed by Drivetrain, we can provide unparalleled support for all TE models.

We are also bolstering our service exchange program, with the addition of more transmissions and axles, to ensure faster turn-around times if a unit goes down.” All three locations will provide full support for Dana Spicer, AxleTech, and Kessler powertrain components, Guascor gas engines, and EMD/Hedemora diesel engine components.

Recognising substantial growth in the natural gas industry, Drivetrain recently embarked on a strategy to expand our capabilities to become a significant player in the segment.

The gas industry requirements align with Drivetrain’s core capabilities in the through-life support of critical heavy rotating and reciprocating machinery. A dedicated business model, capability development plan and branding have been established in order to tailor our approach to segment specific requirements Drivetrain has systematically executed entry into the gas business by securing a distribution agreement with Guascor (a European manufacturer of gas engines and generating sets), investing in training and tooling, and recruiting a highly experienced and capable technical and market development team.

Trading under the brand ‘Gastrain Power and Compression,’ the team has already secured maintenance and breakdown services for both gas driven generating sets, and gas compression packages. Gastrain is expecting to secure longer term maintenance agreements with key industry players in the near future. Gastrain is a viable alternative in the gas industry and based on results to date, the team is very confident of developing a substantial business segment within the Drivetrain Power and Propulsion framework

The Victorian Government in conjunction with Toyota Australia has conducted the C21 Challenge program, first piloted in 2008/9, with more than 40 component suppliers. The aim of the program is to “improve the global competitiveness and sustainability for the 21st Century” of Australian suppliers, by providing them with tools to develop business strategies and improve processes.

A key part of the C21 Challenge is a Strategic Diagnostic Review conducted by Deloitte which benchmarks vehicle component suppliers “against best practice and lean processes in order to ensure the sustainability of their business”.

In September 2010 a Strategic Diagnostic Review of the Drivetrain Power and Propulsion facility in Hallam, Melbourne, was carried out by the lead Deloitte assessor. The review, which involved several visits to the facility, included a comprehensive assessment of policies, procedures and practices against a list of some 100+ questions, covering nine key areas including Management & Leadership, Financial Systems & Cost Structures, Global Sourcing Integration & Marketing Strategies, Customer Focus, New Product Introduction Capability, Quality and Manufacturing, Safety, Technology Investment and Human Resources.

Deloitte scored Drivetrain’s current level of performance extremely high against global best practice (developed from similar assessments conducted at several thousand global automotive suppliers). In fact Drivetrain’s current level of performance matched global best practice in 8 out of 9 areas, and particularly high scores were achieved in Management & Leadership, New Product Introduction Capability and Safety.

Moreover, of the 49 Australian supplier participants in the C21 Challenge, Drivetrain scored 2nd highest!

Drivetrain’s high score against global best practice and local automotive supplier performance supports the Company’s drive to implement robust processes that position it for future growth and enable it to fulfill one of its core values, namely “Excellence in Execution”.

The application of global best practice through the emphasis of robust policy and procedures provides a solid foundation for Drivetrain to realize its growth targets, which are based on the desire to provide its customers with the highest level of technical and supply chain support. On the back of this recognition Customers should be confident that Drivetrain has the leadership, people and processes necessary to provide the operational excellence they expect.

Drivetrain Suppliers and Key Partners can also be confident they are partnering with one of the best Australian suppliers primed, ready and capable for future growth.
